Frequently-asked questions

What is Alberta Well Finder?

The Alberta Well Finder is a tool designed to help users locate and get information about oil and gas wells, and facilities in Alberta, Canada.

What data sources are used?

We utilize publicly available data from the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and other relevant government sources. Data is updated regularly as it becomes available.

How accurate is the location data?

Well site and facilities locates are very accurate—average within 100 meters of actual latitude, longitude (this slight imprecision is due to the limitations of the Domain Land Survey system). Addresses (LSDs, UWIs) are derived from Alberta Energy Regular (AER), which are then geocoded by our partner platform Grid Atlas. While we strive for accuracy, there can be mistakes due to poor reporting to AER. Always verify critical information.

Can I save searches or locations?

Yes, registered users can save their favourite locations and searches for easy access later. You need to create an account to use this feature.

Is there a mobile app?

Currently, the Alberta Well Finder is available as a web application accessible through any modern browser. A dedicated mobile app is not available at this time. If you would like to see a mobile app, please let us know!

How often is the data updated?

We aim to update the data regularly, typically on a monthly basis, depending on the availability of new information from the source providers. Daily activity is updated daily as is made available by Alberta Energy Regulator.

Who is this tool for?

This tool is designed for landowners, environmental consultants, real estate professionals, researchers, industry personnel, and anyone interested in oil and gas activity in Alberta.

Is this an official government tool?

No, the Alberta Well Finder is an independent project and is not affiliated with the Alberta government or the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). We use publicly available government data, which we process and present in a user-friendly format.

What areas does the tool cover?

The tool primarily covers the province of Alberta, Canada, focusing on areas with oil and gas activity. We do not currently provide data for other provinces or territories. If you are looking for data outside of Alberta, please let us know!

Where does the well and facility data come from?

The primary data source is the public datasets provided by the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). We may supplement this with other relevant public data sources. Precise location data is provided by Grid Atlas.

What does “UWI” mean?

UWI stands for Unique Well Identifier. It is a standardized code used across Canada to uniquely identify each oil and gas well.

What does “LSD” mean?

LSD stands for Legal Subdivision. It is part of the Dominion Land Survey (DLS) system used in Western Canada to describe land locations. An LSD represents a ~40-acre or parcel, equivalent to 1/16 of a section, or 402 meters by 402 meters.

Can I report data inaccuracies?

While we source data from official providers, occasional discrepancies can occur. If you suspect an error, we recommend cross-referencing with the AER’s official tools. You can also contact us with specific details, and we will investigate.

Does the tool show real-time well status?

The tool reflects the latest data available in the public datasets we process. It is not a real-time monitoring system. Status updates typically lag behind actual field operations.

How do I search for a specific well or facility?

You can use the search bar to look up wells or facilities by UWI, LSD, license number, operator name, or other identifiers. Advanced search options allow for more specific criteria.

Can I view historical data?

The tool primarily focuses on the current status and information available in the latest datasets. Some historical context (like spud date or abandonment date) is included, but comprehensive historical analysis is not the main focus. If you are looking for specific historical data, please let us know!

What do the different map symbols mean?

Different symbols represent various types of wells (circles: oil, gas, injection, abandoned), and facilities (triangles: batteries, gas plants). A map legend is available to explain the symbols used.

Can I measure distances on the map?

Yes, the map interface includes tools for measuring distances and areas.

Is there a way to filter search results?

Yes, search results can typically be filtered by status, type, location, operator, and other relevant parameters depending on the search type.

Can I export search results?

Data export functionality (e.g., to CSV or Excel) is available for users on specific subscription plans. Check our pricing page for details.

What are “Favourites”?

Favourites allow registered users to save specific wells, facilities, or search queries for quick access later. This helps you keep track of locations or areas of interest.

Do I need an account to use the tool?

Basic search and map viewing are available without an account. However, features like saving favourites, accessing advanced data, and exporting results require a registered account and potentially a subscription.

What are the subscription options?

We offer different subscription tiers (e.g., Lite, Pro and Max) with varying levels of access to data, features, and usage limits. Please see our Plans & pricing page for a detailed comparison.

How do I upgrade or downgrade my subscription?

You can manage your subscription plan through your Account settings page after logging in.
